Domain Name Registration

Your domain name is an extremely important and valuable business asset. It is VITAL that it is registered correctly.

Registering domain names can easily catch out the inexperienced. It can be like leaving your house, shutting and locking the front door behind you, and then posting your keys back through the letter box. Please don’t do this to yourself.

Unless you really know what you are doing, we strongly recommend that you:

  • DO NOT rush to register a domain name.
  • DO NOT rush to register a ‘clutch’ of domain names, thinking that you are being smart.
  • DO NOT be tempted by free or cheap hosting offers.
  • DO NOT register a domain name with one company only to find that your domain name is locked to that company
  • DO NOT ask a helpful friend to register a domain name on your behalf
  • DO NOT rush to get your business cards, stationery, flyers etc done BEFORE you have a website that you are happy with.

There’s a hatful of companies that make it easy for you to register a domain name for just a few pounds. These firms make their money not through domain name registration, but by hoping that you will then pay for their web hosting services. You, or a professional web designer acting on your behalf, may well decide that you do not want to use their hosting services.

Transferring domain names from one hosting company to another is time consuming, very tedious, and can therefore be costly.

When it comes to web hosting, as with most things in life, you usually get what you pay for.

If you are not entirely sure about what you are doing, seek professional advice. Most professionals will be happy to recommend a web hosting company that they have used for years, and know their systems inside out. Professional website designers are likely to be partners, affiliates or resellers of a hosting company’s products – we are. We can pass on fantastic savings on website hosting – we offer a state of-the-art, fully featured, business level hosting package for £50 a year that would cost you £120 as an ordinary customer.

In the past 12 months we have had to help where:

  • The domain name has been registered other than in the true owner’s name – there have been several such instances.
  • A friend has incorrectly registered a domain name and then moved to the other end of the country and to an unknown address.
  • A domain name has been incorrectly registered by someone who subsequently moved abroad.
  • A domain name was incorrectly registered by a person who had, (very sadly), become  terminally ill.

If in doubt, just ask!
